About Us

What is The Mind Attic?

The Mind Attic is designed to introduce readers to the works and ideas of some of the greatest thinkers of Western civilisation: the political, social and economic theorists that have shaped our understanding of the human world. Natural scientists, such as Pythagoras, Newton and Einstein, will not therefore feature here. This is a very deliberate choice, informed by our belief that people are generally much less familiar with social science thinkers and their ideas than their natural science counterparts. This is despite the fact that many of these intellectuals have greatly influenced the course of human history by shaping our understanding of ourselves, our cultures, our politics and our societies.

In addition to the great works of social scientists, The Mind Attic will also pay attention to certain branches of philosophical thought concerned with the development of knowledge. Our aim is to equip readers with the skills to effectively analyse and critique knowledge claims by identifying the assumptions upon which they are based. In today’s world of social media – where we are bombarded with information, some of which is deliberately designed to manipulate and distort our perception of reality – these critical thinking tools have never been more essential.

Who is The Mind Attic for?

The Mind Attic is aimed at anyone who wishes to engage with challenging and stimulating ideas. The only prerequisites are the possession of an open and curious mind and a willingness to engage in some critical self-reflection of your own values, beliefs and assumptions.

Transparency

The Mind Attic participates in the Amazon EU Associates Programme, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn commissions by linking to Amazon. This means that if you click on our Amazon links and buy anything, even something other than the book advertised, we get a small percentage of its price, yet you do not pay any extra. This helps support The Mind Attic by offsetting a fraction of what it takes to maintain the site, and it is very much appreciated.
